Coming soon…

Hiatus: The Waterfall

The Waterfall will be on hiatus until I can get enough of “Blurred Lines” written to post later this month, as well as getting some TVOV comics drawn for the remainder of 2021. I have learned the hard way not to do too many projects at once, so I am taking a few things off of my docket.

“Musings,” Haikus by Matt Slater

The nine muses of Ancient Greece were the inspiration for the poetry prompt from Gage from the Instagram page @impromptuwriters: “Choose a muse and write a poem based on their domaine of inspiration. Be sure to start it off by invoking them!”

I decided to write haikus about each of the muses. After sending them in, he gave me some feedback, before posting some of my haikus on his page. I was pretty excited to be featured on another writer’s page, and I shared that excitement with some close friends and family members. Below, I have embedded the two posts I’m featured in, which together have seven of my haikus. I have also posted as the ones for Polyhymnia and Euterpe. Please enjoy, and be sure to check out Gage’s page for writing prompts and featured writers!

^^ Melpomene, Erato, Terpsichore, and Urania.
^^ Clio, Thaila, and Calliope.

“Hello,” (Euterpe, Music)

Hello, Euterpe.

Help me sing my soul out loud.

Bless me with a song.

“Orpheus,” (Polyhymnia, Sacred Song)

Polyhymnia.

Your son, Orpheus, plays well.

He takes after you.

20th Birthday, Woohoo!

Today is my 20th Birthday!

A special shout out to all my friends and family who wished me a happy birthday and helped me celebrate.

Thank you, everyone!

Today

Whoops!

If you are subscribed to SLS on WordPress, you may have gotten an email showing you the first chapter of my new story, The Waterfall.

However, that was not supposed to be seen by ANYONE until August 1st at 4:30 PM PST. It was accidentally published due to an error on my part. Please do not share the story!

The Waterfall Ch. 1, now that the scheduling is fixed, should premiere on the above date, like planned, on Tapas, Wattpad, and here. The following chapters will be uploaded on Sundays on Wattpad and Tapas, but not here. Sorry about that, but I don’t want to crowd the homepage with all the chapters of my longer stories.

Sorry about the mixup!

If you are not yet subscribed to this blog, please do, but also, please read the first chapter of The Waterfall on Sunday!

If you are subscribed, and received the email with the first chapter, then please, again, don’t share it! Let it be our little temporary secret 😉.

“Cascades Stories” is now “Six Lakes Studios”

Welcome to Six Lakes Studios!

I am changing the website up, but the same content will still be posted. The name is new, the Logo is new, the design is… in progress [insert awkward chuckle].

I felt like the name “Cascades Stories” was too limiting even though a story could mean many things, it feels like it describes just written stories. But that’s not all we have!

So, why Six Lakes Studios? Well, I thought hard to find a name that meant something to me. Then I remembered: I have a lot of memories surrounding lakes, especially the Lakes of Lakewood. One thing I remember best from my childhood is driving over the bridge in Interlaaken, Lakewood, over Lake Steilacoom, in my grandma Marliss’ van, whenever we went to the donut shop. May she rest in peace.

The new logo is a trace I made of Lakewood’s six biggest lakes: American, Steilacoom (“Still-uh-Come”), Gravelly, Louise, Waughop (“Wah-Op”), and Carp. I originally had Secqualitchew Lake on there as well, but then remembered that it’s on Fort Lewis in Joint Base Lewis-McChord. I was actually wanted to rename the site “Lake Media,” but a quick internet search told that name was already taken (Thanks, Bing!).

I wasn’t planning to do the name change so soon, but things will be picking up soon, and I want to get the ball rolling. We need more good things right now, after the shaky first year-and-a-half of this damn decade.

I hope you enjoy the new site!

Postponed: Tales of Human Nature

I apologize, but Tales of Human Nature will be postponed until further notice. The story needs a lot of work.

First Short Story on Reedsy!

Happy Holidays, everyone. I have added “Reedsy” to the links page to celebrate the posting of my first short story to the Reedsy weekly prompt/short story contest.

Each Friday or Saturday, Reedsy posts five prompts, and in order to submit their story to the contest, writer must write a 1,000 to 3,000-word long story based on one of the prompts and submit it by 9 PM Pacific (12 Eastern) the following Friday. The theme for this week’s contest was “My True Love Gave to Me,” and the prompt I chose for my short story was “Write about someone who is given a bird for the holidays but doesn’t know how to take care of it.

I wrote about a gay, autistic man who is tasked with taking care of his late uncle’s aviary, full of fifty exotic birds, at Christmastime, in order to receive his share of the estate. He also deals with his bullying cousin, who is tasked with restoring the uncle’s car collection.

I will post the story to Wattpad and this website on January 2nd, after the voting for “My True Love Gave to Me” has concluded.

I am excited about this story. I don’t care about winning, I’m just glad I get to be a part of this contest, and have other people see my work. I’m also proud of the story, and I hope to expand on it soon, maybe as a full-length book.

Thank you, and Happy Holidays! – Matt
